Paul Coleman (Senior #50) and Preston Mixon (Junior #76) not only standout when walking the hallways of Jeff Davis but they are also two of the pillars to the Jeff Davis offensive line. See what the Montgomery Advertiser had to say about these two gentle giants.
But JD is coming off its first loss of the year to region foe and city rival Robert E. Lee, the only game this year its been held under 30 points. Coleman is determined to get back on track against Sidney Lanier on Thursday.
“The thing about Paul, our line is fairly young, so he helps everybody out,” Jeff Davis coach Lee Carter said. “He’s the only senior on the offensive line. I think all of them flock toward Paul, he’s people person. He’s one of the team captains. Everybody loves him.”
“He took a beating last year,” Carter said. “So it’s good to see him grow up this year. He’s a left tackle with the memory of a defensive back. He only remembers his good stuff. He doesn’t remember anything bad that happens. Lanier has a good defensive end, so we’ve been teasing him. We’re looking forward to this matchup.”
“Last year, I was young, I wasn’t as strong as I am, but I competed,” Mixon said. “Most of the guys I played were 18, they were real strong, they were seniors and stuff. So I just go out on the field, my coach threw me out there, I had to play. But this year it’s different. I’ve been in the program for two years. Got in the weight room, I’ve been studying my plays, and it’s much easier. I played with (Thomas) at McKee (middle school). Played against him last year. Stars don’t mean anything to me. You’ve got to show me.”
It’s the second straight week Jeff Davis is facing a city rival, and a familiar opponent. Carter and Lanier coach C.J. Harris played together at Alabama State, so there shouldn’t be many surprises. Still, Carter is determined for this meeting with a city opponent to go better than the last.
“When I watch film, I see a lot of the stuff that I do that he does as well,” Carter said. “They’re gaining. They’re improving. We’re improving. But we don’t plan on giving them their third win of the season. It’ll come, but we don’t plan on being the one to give it to them. We don’t plan on dropping any more.”
