Jeff Davis is 3-0 for the first time since 2000, and there’s a reason behind it.

Defensive ends Travis Bell and Alec Jackson are two of the Vols juniors coach Lee Carter said is the reason for the culture change.

“What’s not being noticed is, this junior class, I got them from Brewbaker and I got them from McKee. Well, combined they lost two games. McKee lost two games, and that was twice to Brewbaker in the championship. So that’s a testament to those two middle school programs,” Carter said. “I got these kids from those middle school programs, and they’re not used to losing. They expect to win.”

Jeff Davis travels to No. 10 Auburn on Thursday for a Class 7A, Region 2 matchup, hoping to redeem its 51-14 loss last year.

The duo of Bell and Jackson have helped the JD defense to holding opponents to less than 10 points a game. Bell – 6-foot-1, 251 pounds – leads the team with 20 tackles and three sacks this season. He also serves as the goal-line back, and has a rushing touchdown.

Bell said the defense’s strong play is a result of experience paying off.

“We mostly have the same people from last year, so now we have better communication. Everybody’s on the same vibe. Everybody’s together, everybody’s talking. That’s why we’re playing like we’re playing right now,” Bell said. “The communication my defensive line and I have, they don’t know where we’re coming from.”

Jackson – a 6-foot-5, 240-pound 3-star prospect – said Bell’s play has helped him out.

“I feel real confident that I have somebody on the other side watching my back doing the same thing I’m doing on the other side, creating havoc and stuff,” Jackson said. “So it’s real nice to have somebody to help try to get to the quarterback.”
